Summary

Old decks can make it tough to enjoy outdoor spaces. This project called for a complete overhaul, replacing a worn lower deck and outdated stairs with safer, longer-lasting features. The homeowner wanted a space that looked fresh and would stand up to years of use.

The Work

Demolished and hauled away the lower 15'x12' deck and two sets of old stairs
Built a new 4'x4' platform with one step down from the top deck opening
Poured a 4'x4' concrete pad at ground level for solid stair anchoring and landing
Created a new right-side opening and installed a matching handrail
Built and anchored a new set of 17 stairs, 4 feet wide, with a handrail wrapping down the right side
Closed off the old stair opening with a matching handrail
Replaced and secured 55' of top rail and blocked existing handrail for added stability
Removed and replaced all decking on the 37'x12' top deck, installing new boards at a 45-degree angle
Applied joist flashing tape to all deck framing
Built and installed a self-closing gate at the top of the stairs to match the railing

The Outcome

With the new deck and stairs in place, the outdoor area feels safer and more welcoming. The upgraded platform, fresh decking boards, and sturdy handrails give the space a solid, finished look.
